ENGLISH
TITLE: Language and sexual identity among homosexual Maghrebis in France ABSTRACT: Rachid O. was the first Maghrebian author to write on the theme of homosexuality. In his last novel he declares that the French language is not only a useful literary material but a liberty allowing him to tell the truth and feel more free than he could in his own language. Through this concept, along with a look at the history of sexuality and immigration in France, this thesis explores the formation of sexual/social identity and the use of French language through testimonies of several Maghrebian homosexual men and women. These cases include authors Abdellah Taia and Brahim Nait-Balk and Nina Bouraoui, of which several passages from their texts have been analyzed, and testimonies of Maghrebian lesbians living in France. In sum, all of these cases have experienced dual-identity crises that conflict Maghrebian/French and Muslim/homosexual, and all appear to have a preference of expressing their identities through the French language. The thesis concludes by proposing that the French language acts as an over-arching symbol of France and its granted liberties, and among homosexual Maghrebis, the tool to express their sexual identity.
